In mid-August, Samuel chose a striking spot at Cap d’Antibes for his proposal to Pei Yee. This corner of the French Riviera, known for its sweeping sea views, pine-covered cliffs, and Mediterranean light, has long drawn couples looking for a setting that feels both dramatic and intimate. It’s not just a backdrop, but a place with its own character.
The session took place during golden hour, when the low evening light wraps the coastline in a warm, soft glow. That window is short, usually no more than thirty to forty minutes, which is exactly why timing matters as much as location when planning a proposal shoot: arrive too early and the light is flat, too late and it’s gone. Getting there ahead of time to scout the exact angle, where the sun would sit relative to the rocks and the water, made it possible to be in position and out of the way before Samuel even knelt down.
As he did, Pei Yee’s surprise and joy said everything the light alone couldn’t. It’s that kind of unguarded reaction, the half-second before she understood what was happening, then the moment she did, that separates documentary-style proposal photography from a staged shoot. Nothing was directed. The only job was to be close enough to catch it and far enough not to be noticed.
Between the location, the light, and the emotion between them, this proposal on the French Riviera is one Samuel and Pei Yee will be able to revisit through these photos for years to come, not just as a record of the moment, but as a reminder of exactly how it felt to be there.
